Golwe Picnic and Camp Site
25 minutes from Tshulu Camp, on the Sibasa-Masisi Road is Golwe Picnic & Camp Site, one of the best known birding spots in the Soutpansberg Mountains, and is run by one of the most experienced local bird guides, Christopher Nethonzhe.
At dawn one can hear African Broadbill around the campsite. Other special birds are Pink-throated Twinspot, Scaly-throated Honey Guide, Grey Waxbill and Crowned Hornbill.
Apart from braai stands and picnic tables for day visitors, the site also has 2 Safari tents equipped with beds and linen, and 4 camp sites. There are ablution facilities with hot water and flushing toilets. (There is no electricity so please charge your cell phones in advance.) There is easy 2 wheel drive access.
Catering is offered (but must be organized in advance) including traditional Venda food.
The site is available for groups wishing to host open air meetings and parties.
Marked circular trails lead from the campsite up the valley and to a waterfall. The campsite offers a convenient base from which to visit Mpaphuli Cycad Reserve, Makuya Park, KNP Punda Maria and the Gundani Brachystegia Woodland.
Christopher Nethonzhe, the local Birdlife SA-accredited site guide is available to guide you along the trails.
Golwe is owned and run by members of the Vhurivhuri Community. All proceeds go towards the development of the community and supporting unemployed people from the village who are willing to help at the campsite.
